- CHAPTER NINE -
THE MIGHTY CRAB RESCUE
‘We’re not losing Jacob Crab. Sail around the top outer rim of The Big Whizzo, Captain Jimmy. We need time before we get sucked down in the centre whirlpool vortex!’ Bibi screamed into the wind and flying spray. ‘We will save him!’ she cried, as she grabbed a length of rope and instructed Princess Liquorice to take the other end of the rope in her teeth and to, under no circumstances, mess around. ‘Full power on the flying collar. Let’s go, let’s fly, let’s save the Jacob Crab, even though he also has a terribly stupid liking for Horrid Green Custard. He’s a hero and he’s our hero!’ Bibi screamed as she wrapped the rope around her wrist, thought ‘ massive rocket power boost ’ and zoomed up high into the sky.
As they flew, the loop of rope hung between them. Bibi’s plan was to fly low over Jacob Crab, for him to the grab the rope in a giant claw and for them to lift him up and out of the reach of Oscar Shark Monster’s snapping jaws. Then, fly him back to the Ocean Flyer before it disappeared down The Big Whizzo – and that great ocean whirlpool, the entrance to the mermaid domain, now very close and already starting to suck the Ocean Flyer into its outer devilish swirl.
Princess Liquorice was flying in rollercoaster fashion. ‘Quit that,’ Bibi scolded. ‘Fly straight. Look, there they are. Oscar Shark Monster’s surfaced and look! Jacob Crab’s still clinging on. Lower, let’s go down lower.
‘Jacob Crab!’ Bibi shouted at the top of her voice. ‘Up here, look up here!’
But Jacob Crab was unable to hear. He was just desperately clinging on for dear life. And then, without warning, Oscar Shark Monster dived again, and both shark and crab disappeared from sight into the five-mile deep Ocean Beyond.
‘Go higher. Circle, circle around and keep a good lookout. We need to spot them as soon as they surface – crabs can’t swim in deep water. If Jacob Crab loses his grip he’ll sink miles down and drown.’
Princess Liqcs did a sneaky backflip thinking Bibi wasn’t watching. ‘I said quit that,’ she scolded, catching sight of the move out of the corner of her eye.
‘Woof woof woof,’ Liqcs barked. ‘Down there, over there, towards the sun.’
They zoomed around, approached from behind and Princess Liquorice landed on the top of Jacob Crab’s broad landing-pad-like carapace. ‘Hi,’ she barked, ‘surprise, surprise!’
In total stunned shock, Jacob Crab released his tight grip on Oscar Shark Monster and started sliding down his grooved, spotted, rough-skinned shark body towards his wild and madly angry foam-thrashing tail.
‘HERE! Take the rope,’ barked Princess Liquorice desperately. ‘Quick, quick, take it! We’ll fly you up, up and up and up. Come on, you great shell-encased muscly moron that can’t even bark, sniff or enjoy a good wee.’
Insulting Jacob Crab made him very angry. He grabbed hold of the hanging rope with a grim look of just you wait in his beady eyes.
